“The Lady Vanishes” was directed by Alfred Hitchcock and was written by Sidney Gilliat who covered the screenplay and Ethel Lina White who covered the novel. It was released on November 1st, 1938 and was considered to be a thriller, mystery and drama. In the film, travelers were delayed on a trans-European train for the period of one night because of bad weather in Mandrika, which was a small fictional country. As a result, all of the passengers on the train were crammed into a hotel in the small village where the socialite Iris Henderson met Miss Froy, who was an old governess. It isn’t long after the journey restarts that Miss Froy disappears.

The Lady Vanishes cast and crew consisted of:

  • Iris Matilda Henderson- who was played by Margaret Lockwood.
  • Gilbert Redman- who was played by Michael Redgrave.
  • Dr. Hartz of Prague- who was played by Paul Lukas.
  • Miss Froy, Governess- who was played by Dame May Whitty.
  • Eric Todhunter- who was played by Cecil Parker
  • Mrs. Margaret Todhunter- who was played by Linden Travers.
  • Caldicott- who was played by Naunton Wayne.
  • Charters- who was played by Basil Radford.
  • Baroness Isabel Nistona- who was played by Mary Clare.
  • Boris the Hotel Manager- who was played by Emile Boreo.

Googie Withers, Sally Stewart, Philip Leaver, Catherine Lacey and Selma Vaz Dias were also included in the film as well.

“The Lady Vanishes” was originally planned to be entitled “The Lost Lady”. Roy William Neill was supposed to have directed it under this name however; it was adapted by Frank Launder and Sidney Gilliat from Ethel Lina White’s novel, “The Wheel Spins”. There was a remake of the movie that was created in nineteen seventy nine. The plot behind this film differs a considerable amount from the novel that was written by White. In this film, Miss Froy reveals herself as an innocence old lady that is really looking forward to meeting her octogenarian parents. However, it is later revealed that Miss Froy is in actuality, a spy that is carrying some type of secret message that is encrypted in musical notes. However, in the novel written by white, the wheels keeps on spinning, and the train really never stops, and in the end, there isn’t a final shoot out.

“The Lady Vanishes” is truly a classic film that is going to remain a hit for years to come. Even though it was first created in nineteen thirty eight, there has been one remake of the movie since then in nineteen seventy nine. It is up to you to watch both, the original and the remake, to see which one is better. Most people have a tendency of sticking to the classics but there are times that the remake of a film can be better than the original because the directors and producers know the mistakes that were made in the first film. It is really a trail and error event when a film is remade.
