For those of you out there that are unfamiliar with who Arelia Margarita Taveras is, she is a former media commentator and lawyer that claims to have lost around one million dollars while gambling in Atlantic City. Arelia Taveras mentioned that she began going to the casinos in Atlantic City to relax and suddenly she was getting some form of high roller treatment which included limousines coming to whisk her away to the resort.
According to the associated press, Arelia Taveras claimed in her lawsuit that the casinos that she played at had a civil duty to observe the compulsion she had and to put a stop to it. In New Jersey, Arelia Taveras filed a twenty million dollar racketeering lawsuit with the United States District Court. The defendants in the lawsuit were six casinos located in New Jersey and one casino located in Las Vegas.
Arelia Taveras also mentioned that she was allowed to bring Sasha, her dog, along with her to the blackjack tables while just sitting in her purse. She also indicated that she would spend several days at a time at the tables without sleeping or eating. She would brush her teeth with disposable wipes just so she wouldn’t have to leave. All-in-all, the casinos believe that they did nothing wrong and reported to the associate press that Arelia Taveras was the one that caused her own problems.
The Blanketed Truth
Buried beneath the rubble, you will find that Arelia Margarita Taveras lost her own law practice, her parents home, her apartment and she now owes the IRS fifty eight thousand dollars. The truth of the matter is that Arelia had a really bad habit, gambling is like drug addiction, you try it and you like it and then you continue to do it. Once you are addicted to something it is really hard to overcome the battle that you fight.
In the lawsuit that Arelia filed, there were several different casinos that were mentioned:

- Resorts Atlantic City
- Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort
- Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino
- Showboat Casino Hotel
- MGM Grand Hotel and Casino
- Bally’s Atlantic City
All of these casinos deny that they had any part in wrongdoing and in the court papers they say that all of Arelia’s problems were brought on right by herself. There were some of the casinos that were dismissed in court from the lawsuit but Arelia was able to file another lawsuit of those dismissed if she would like to.
Facing Gambling Addiction
When you are gambling at casinos, you are responsible for your own actions. The casino staff is there to assist you in anyway that they can and if they notice you have a problem, they will recommend that you seek out professional help but they can’t make you take their advice and that is the sole purpose behind the casinos fighting the lawsuit. People that face a gambling addiction are troublesome and the only way that they are going to be able to recover from their addiction is to realize that they have a problem.
